Answer me this: do the following declarations sound familiar? “There’s no way I can do that”; “I can’t afford a holiday”; “I’ll never be able to live in the house of my dreams”, “I’m not good enough to pass this exam; “there’s no way I’ll get promoted”. Now, for added effect, let’s cue in some really sombre background solo violin accompaniment to the following declarations. “Nobody loves me”; “nobody appreciates me”, “everybody hates me”; “I’ll never be good enough”, “I’ll never find the man/woman of my dreams”. Ok, enough. You’ve no doubt heard or said them all too often at some point in your life. I certainly have, and sometimes more often than I would want.
Please……stop with these negative affirmations! You ask, “Why not”? “I don’t like to think this way but that’s exactly how I feel”. Boom! There is your answer. You’ve thought your way into this feeling and emotional state. So, if this sounds like you, then let’s take a little refresher course and get back to basics and back on track, my friend.
Sometimes on our journey of self-improvement and discovery, we go off track for a multitude of reasons. We need to be aware of when this is happening, and when we do, we need to immediately stop this track of thought. We need to remind ourselves that our conscious mind is the captain of our ship, our navigator, that which impresses all thoughts in our subconscious mind which inevitably manifests our dominant thoughts into being. The subconscious is the obedient crew that carries out our commands to the letter. It obeys the conscious mind on what it believes and accepts to be true, as commanded.
Now, let’s remind ourselves of the basics of how the conscious (objective) mind, and how the subconscious (subjective) mind work and interact.
We have one mind which possesses two distinct parts or spheres with their own characteristics; these being the conscious and subconscious minds.
The conscious mind is responsible for our thinking when we are in an awakened state such as logic and intellect, decision making, details of our lives, planning, talking and organisation.
The subconscious mind is responsible for bodily functions (breathing, digestion, heart rate). It also records all of your previous life experiences, your beliefs, your memories, your skills, all situations you’ve been through and all images you’ve ever seen. Your subconscious mind is not capable of arguing or persuading. Your subconscious mind operates only in the present.
It’s been said many times that the conscious mind is the gatekeeper to your subconscious mind. Its primary function is to protect your subconscious mind from false impressions. So, be very careful of what you think you feel, or think you are, and how you perceive situations as your subconscious will always go to work to find ways to ensure it gives back the impression your conscious mind is feeding it.
Now, that said, let’s go back to those continual negative declarations and thoughts. Such affirmations only serve as blockages to our full potential and the life we so desire to lead. If it were possible to hear the conversation played out between the two spheres of your mind when you affirm such thoughts, the conscious and subconscious mind would most likely interact as follows:
Conscious Mind: “I can’t afford a holiday”
Subconscious Mind: “Ok conscious. If you say so. I’ll make sure that money will not be made available to you for such a pleasure”.
Conscious Mind: “There’s no way I’ll get promoted”
Subconscious Mind: “No problem conscious. I’ll ensure that there is no absolutely no way that this will possible for you. Under no circumstance shall I help you shine in front of your boss or colleagues. I will not allow all that available talent to be nurtured or exposed. Nor will I allow you to act in anyway which would allow others to see your tremendous capabilities in order that a promotion is most definitely not on the cards”.
Conscious Mind: “Nobody loves me”
Subconscious Mind: “Noted conscious. I’ll make sure that I bring down the internal barriers of emotion and make sure I let no one in who will love you the way you wish to be loved. After all, your wish is my command!”
Are you starting to get the picture? How did the above conversations make you feel? For me, I felt an overwhelming sense of wasted thought and emotion. I have to question why I’m am using my time thinking this way when it is clearly unproductive. Understand, that the subconscious will, with habitual thought and feeling, bring forth thoughts into your reality. The subconscious mind doesn’t know reality from fantasy, it cannot argue, it does not know past or future tenses and can only understand and work with the present. It is extremely loyal and will deliver almost anything you ask of it. If you can learn to communicate properly with the subconscious there is no limit on what you can accomplish.
So, we’ve acknowledged that a positive mind set is now needed to set free the shackles of a lack lustre life. Given this, never affirm negative thoughts and never begin and try to improve your state of well- being with conscious statements which are in the future tense such as, “I will have”, or “I will be”. No results will be obtained. The subconscious will always ignore these thoughts. The subconscious can only process in the present. Always think, “I AM”, “I FEEL” or “I HAVE” dependant on your desire. Think and speak of all desires in the present. For example, you’ve seen a beautiful cashmere coat in a designer shop of a trendy part of the city, but don’t possess the financial means to buy it at present. Stop yourself from saying, “I can’t afford that coat”. Reverse that thought. Say, “The coat is mine. I accept it mentally, and my subconscious sees to it that I receive it”. Repeat, repeat, repeat on a daily basis with great intent, a deep desire and so much positive feeling and it will happen. If it helps, write it down at read and repeat it. You can do this at any time, but best done just before sleeping to allow no further thoughts or distractions enter your mind so that you can fully focus and meditate on your desire(s) and let the subconscious mind take over.
I’ve had success in implementing many small desires to big desires (owning my own business) using this technique. I also dig deep to discover why the desire is a desire in the first instance (break down why it gives you goose bumps and why it is so appealing), and continually feed my subconscious mind with such thoughts and get it to work on a deeper level sometimes prompting an outcome I didn’t even consider.
When your habitual thinking is harmonious and constructive you will begin to experience life on a different level. Health, success and prosperity will heighten. Peace of mind will become inevitable as you being to see your desires come into being, time and time again. How wonderful! How marvellous! What next?
How do you want to feel? What do you want to do? Where do you want to be in your career? Who would be your ideal partner? Where do you want to go on holiday? Why? Dig deep. It is so important that the feelings, thoughts and visions that accompany the life experiences you want to bring into being can be felt and believed, and that you have utter faith that your desired state of living will materialise. Ninety percent feeling and ten percent thought will get you there. Emotions that feel heightened have the best chance of materialising. Make it a habit. Start getting excited, friends!
Whether you are completely new to the power of the subconscious mind, or have started your journey into the realms of self-improvement and find yourself losing faith in your journey, I truly hope you can take something from this article to remind yourselves that you are an incredible being who can (with applied thought and feeling), be in control of your destiny. The mind is an extremely powerful tool which, if treated and nurtured with love and respect, can bring forth an abundance of joy in your life.
And remember, when your thoughts finally manifest…….always give gratitude!
Yours,
Hazel H
